Many organizations fail by planning for an event before it happens and consequently, try to fit the crisis into the plan. But in the complex, chaotic environment of a crisis, we can only rely on plans as a starting point. The real planning must happen at the time of  the event. This session discusses how to build tacit knowledge among leadership, maintain situational awareness during events, and develop solutions around the specific context of a crisis with a decision-making model called Command and Control.

A Partnership to Reduce Risk for Transit Operators-Electronic Route Qualifications

Through a partnership between the King County’s Office of Risk Management and Metro Transit Bus Operations Training, the Electronic Route Qualification system was born. Sean Catanese from King County’s Office of Risk Management, saw the vision and benefit of a "pie in the sky" dream offered by Carri Brezonick, from Bus Operations Training. Sean and Carri will walk through the analysis that led to the development of this project and will show you the end result of their partnership.

On Track: TTC's ERM Journey

The TTC is responsible for the safety of millions of commuters and its employees, and balancing risks while managing costs is a constant challenge. Mohammed Ismail will provide a behind-the-scenes look at what drove the TTC to adopt its ERM initiatives. He’ll share how the ERM program was born out of the need to prioritize capital resources, which in turn drove the risk model choice. Find out how the TTC customized its ERM platform to fit its processes and vice versa, and how the unique deployment approach reflected its needs and available resources. Mohamed will also discuss which components made sense, how one size doesn’t fit all, and how the program is delivering the value required by the board and management. This unique case demonstrates the criteria used to decide how to customize both ERM program design and implementation.
