Route 3: ROADEO OPERATORS WORKSHOP: Managing Stress

8:30 - 10:30 a.m.
Meeting Room 18-19, 1st Floor, Tampa Convention Center

Working in the transit industry is one of the most stressful jobs in today’s society. Traffic - passengers - more traffic – more passengers – supervisors – faulty equipment – all add stress to an already tense day. Few people really understand what stress is, or recognize what it does within our bodies. Even fewer people know how to control stress, live with it, and make it work for them. In this workshop, Dale Knutson will take both a humorous and serious, as well as interactive look at what stress is, what it does, and how you, as bus operators, supervisors, and managers, can control not only the stress – but how you react to the stress you are feeling. Mr. Knutson will talk about the physical signs of stress, as well as the mental signs of stress; both of which affect job performance as well as personal feelings. He will also discuss our system of values, and how that contributes to daily stress. Finally, you will be given specific things you can do to alleviate stress as you do your job; as well as how you can deal with the stressors at home. This workshop promises to be enjoyable, fast-paced, and interactive.

Certificate of Attendance awarded upon completion of the course.

Route 2: Accessibility Session - Parts 1 & 2

10 - 11:30 a.m.
Florida Ballroom V, 2nd Floor, Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel

PART 1: NEW TRENDS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Approaches to meeting ADA requirements, providing quality service and managing costs

Ever since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990, the public transportation industry, and public and private sectors, have worked to provide accessible transit services and comparable paratransit services for the increasing number of customers, despite budget constraints and the rising costs of traditional ADA paratransit. Learn more about transit agencies that have taken progressive, visionary, and strategic approaches to provide a broad range of diverse transit services. The session includes an update on a current TCRP synthesis project examining new ADA service delivery models.

PART 2: ACCESSIBILITY AND AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES

Shaping customers' response to advanced technology

Partnerships continue to advance new autonomous driving pilots in this country. The session will feature two examples: Los Angeles County’s Access Services’ smaller-scale pilot, covering a few short routes in the Los Angeles area; and Keolis Transit’s launch of the first public self-driving autonomous shuttles in the downtown innovation district of Las Vegas.

The journey to the top: you have to go – to grow

Those who want to make it to the top should not expect to get there by remaining in place. The path to the top is often a winding journey, leading you up and down in different directions. Climbing to the executive suite – from the basement – in the same organization is like winning the lottery, and what are the odds of that? Successful industry leaders will share their journeys to the top.

Route 5: Mid-Level Manager Workshop: Leading with Dignity

1 - 3:45 p.m.
Meeting Room 12, 3rd Floor, Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel

Transportation leaders are called upon to manage, in a microcosm, the complex issues facing society as a whole. Though leaders are taught to listen, to help solve problems, and to manage others as they move the organization forward, many feel ill-equipped to address the shift in workforce attitudes and complex issues that employees bring to the conversation.

This interactive workshop will provide attendees with an approach to engage employees from a stance of honoring dignity, as they address difficult employee issues and navigate the complex relationships and the “problems of living and working” that commonly arise in today’s workplace.

AUDIENCE: Transit mid-managers and those preparing for the next step in their career.

FEE: The course is open to all Bus & Paratransit Conference registrants at no additional charge.

REGISTRATION: Pre-registration is not required. Please check on space and materials availability on site at the APTA registration desk. Space is limited so participation is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Lead, Follow, or Get Left Behind

Transportation is currently undergoing a transformation. Now is the time to start preparing the right regulatory framework for automated buses and circulators to ensure they will service public policy goals. For example, potential changes to land-use and development might occur when automated bus or circulator service is implemented, which impacts curb parking, pedestrian facilities and building accessibility. Other issues that may arise to prepare for the onset of automated transit vehicles include equity, safety and other policy implications that have yet to be identified.

Join this panel session to hear about the challenges and opportunities in the planning and deployment of automated bus service.

Innovative Partnerships: Learn how to attract and retain our future workforce!

Transit agencies are increasingly faced with the mass exodus of knowledge with the retirement of baby boomers. This creates the urgent task of attracting and retaining talented employees who can adapt to the demands of a fast-changing environment. To overcome these challenges, many transit agencies are partnering with local schools and non-profits to create programs that counteract the negative effects associated with these generational transformations.

This session will explore innovative approaches and strategies Valley Metro, Maryland Transit Authority, and Metro Transit have successfully employed to help sustain their future workforce. It will provide insights into best practices and frameworks for partnerships that allow for specialized training and the promotion of distinct career pathways to empower and advance future ambassadors of the industry.

HOST TOUR: Bay Spirit II Harbor Tour

3:15 - 5:15 p.m.

(100-person limit)
An extension of the Florida Aquarium, this 55-minute long wildlife excursion will take you through the largest and busiest port in the southern United Sates, Port Tampa Bay. Aboard the Bay Spirit II, the 72- foot catamaran that seats 100 passengers, you will be guided through the port by a Florida Aquarium experienced naturalist. The guide will give you a view of the extensive ecosystem of Tampa Bay and numerous animal species that call this port, and habitat, home. Bay Spirit II abides by the Dolphin SMART program guidelines, keeping a safe and non-disturbing distance from the impressive mammals, while still giving you a close enough look to be amazed!

On a tour of the Tampa Bay port, you will most certainly see the amazing Atlantic bottlenose dolphin closer than ever. The cruise line claims that a dolphin is seen 85-90% of the time. With over 400 dolphins within the bay, this isn’t hard to believe! You will also see numerous bird species, an occasional manatee, or even a few sea turtles – so don’t forget to bring your camera! Click here for the flyer

Participants should meet at Dick Greco Plaza, across from the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel, no later than 3:20 p.m. to take either the 3:30 p.m. Streetcar or a HART bus to the Florida Aquarium. Registrants may also make their way to the Aquarium on foot, but must arrive no later than 3:50 p.m.

Please sign up for this tour at HART’s host information desk, Convention Registration Desk, 2nd Floor in the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel.

Tour compliments of HART.
