Mobility at a Crossroads: Transit Adaptation Strategies and the Path Forward

9 - 11 a.m.
Jasmine, Terrace Level, Hyatt Regency Miami

Our long-standing notions about mobility are about to change. Public transportation is facing the greatest transformational moment of our generation. Technology is facilitating such change, at a pace difficult to keep up with. Some of that will be disruptive to our industry.

But this is also a time of great opportunity. Public transportation agencies are positioned to become the backbone of an emerging network of mobility providers involving new and different partners and technologies.

Looking ahead, public buses, subways, streetcars, and commuter trains will complement driverless automobiles by serving as our transportation network’s high-capacity trunk lines. Transit agencies, serving as mobility managers, will bring all means of travel together into an integrated, customer-friendly service removing the hassle of trip planning and one-off payments.

Sound futuristic? It’s not that far off. Our panel of big-thinkers will say why.

The opening presentation will outline strategies for anticipating and leading market disruption, to be followed by a panel discussion. The audience is encouraged to engage in the conversation throughout the morning.

Workforce of the Future

1:15 - 3:15 p.m.
Jasmine, Terrace Level, Hyatt Regency Miami

Executive leaders in public transportation recognize their pivotal role in reinventing their organizations, defining a progressive culture, responding to evolving needs of customers, communities, and stakeholders, and delivering high-quality performance. This three-part session will provide insight and tactics used by your peers.

Part 1
Learn how one of your peers is transforming the culture of their organization to build and sustain a highly-recognized and respected workforce of the future.

Part 2
Transit agencies are developing cutting-edge apprenticeship programs for the frontline workforce created through the partnerships of management, labor, education and government support. These programs help to establish career pathways to critical jobs in the transit industry. Learn how existing apprenticeship programs in Cleveland, Santa Clara Valley, and Philadelphia are providing technical training and curricula, and opportunities for career progression for bus and rail operators and maintainers. These model programs may help you “grow” your own.

Part 3
This session concludes with a preliminary report of a transit and development needs assessment conducted by the National Transit Institute (NTI). The purpose of the assessment is to identify future workforce training needs for public transportation.

Transit Agency Deputies: Next in Command – First-Rate in Leadership Workshop

7:30 - 9 a.m.
Orchid CD, Terrace Level, Hyatt Regency Miami

Transit agency deputies play instrumental roles in supporting their chief executive, boards, staff, stakeholders, partners and many others. Some hold their positions for a few years and move on; some are in these positions for much longer. You as deputies bring strength and leadership to the foundation and future of your organizations. You represent your organization and your chief executive. You provide, and role-model, the critical leadership skills and experiences to carry out your roles and exceed expectations. And, at a moment’s notice, you may be asked to take charge.

This early morning workshop provides a forum to hear insights from industry leaders and fellow colleagues to engage in frank conversation on issues, challenges, and key leadership competencies that matter the most to this group.

Our planned conversation topics include:
  • What factors are driving the shifting and changing landscapes in which you operate?
  • What new responsibilities have you recently assumed?  Are you being set up for success?
  • What new tools, skills, safety nets, and partners do you now need to succeed and sustain levels of expected excellence and contributions?
  • Your career journeys, pathways, and decisions -- did you land where you are by design or by luck?
  • How will you leverage the expertise of those in the room? What do new successes look like? What does your new plan look like?

Three Topical Issues: Sustainability, Resiliency, and Ridership

10:45 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Jasmine, Terrace Level, Hyatt Regency Miami

This session will address three current topics on the minds of transit CEOs.

Sustainability: Adoption of sustainable practices (environmental, social, and financial) enhances the standing of transit agencies in communities, and helps the bottom line in so doing.

Resiliency: Although South Florida has endured many storms over the years, the growing intensity and impact of recent storms has underscored the need for community design and infrastructure that will withstand increasingly severe weather. South Florida has planned accordingly, and their story has lessons and take-aways that can inform how other regions plan and prepare.

Ridership: National trends in travel behavior have impacted the way people are using public transportation. What are these forces, and how can transit agencies adapt and position themselves going forward?

Presenters
  • J. Barry Barker, Transit Authority of River City (TARC), Louisville, KY
  • Alice Bravo, Florida District Leader, WSP USA, New York, NY
  • Dr. Steven E. Polzin, Ph.D., P.E., Center for Urban Transportation Research, Tampa, FL

LUNCHEON: Why Corporations are Seeking to Locate in Transit-rich Environments

12 - 1:30 p.m.
Jasmine, Terrace Level, Hyatt Regency Miami

Amazon has made it clear that high-performing public transportation service will among their top criteria as they select a location for their second corporate headquarters. They are not alone.  In recent years, Marriott, McDonalds, Panasonic, and Motorola are among the several dozen corporations that have located or relocated to places where transit can provide access to the high-tech, high-skill talent required for them to succeed in the current “knowledge economy.” Research by Brookings Institution explains how metropolitan areas are growing, what’s driving their expansion, and how public transportation is the effectiveness of the regional economies of today.

  • Rob Gannon, King County Metro
Guest Speaker
  • Adie Tomer, Fellow, Metropolitan Policy Program, Brookings Institution, Washington, DC

Terrorism and Cyber Security Address and Exchange

1:45 - 3:45 p.m.
Jasmine, Terrace Level, Hyatt Regency Miami

Transit security is an important concern for transit CEOs. The inclusion of the executive team as well as the engagement of transit employees, the riding public, federal partners, and state and local law enforcement is critical to ensuring the safety and security of transit systems in preventing crime and terrorism. The TSA Administrator and FBI Deputy Assistant Director for Counterterrorism will provide insights and priorities on stakeholder partnerships regarding cyber security and terrorism. The sharing of lessons learned and the chance to join colleagues in a conversation regarding the importance of security, demonstrates that “Safety and Security Is Our Number One Priority” isn’t just an expression, it’s a pledge.
