Capitol Ballroom 4, Fourth Floor, Hyatt Regency Denver

Technology innovations & best practices in co-locating bus & rail

Hear from the experts about potential impacts of technological innovations of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality in the Operations Control Centers (OCC) environment. In recent years there has been an on-going debate about co-locating bus and rail OCC. Some research has been done on this subject regarding cost/benefit anyalsis, human factors, labor issues, and lessons learned. LA Metro and HDR recently completed a benchmarking analysis of transit agency OCCs that have co-located. Based on this research, as well as additional cost and human factors analysis, Metro decided to plan for co-locating their bus and rail OCCs. During the course of this study, the focus has been on how OCCs can better serve customers and operators. This panel includes LA Metro, as well as a representative from MARTA's new OCC, and TriMet's established OCC. This provides a diverse set of opinions from two large and one smaller agency, one existing, one new, and one planned center, from three distinct areas of the country. Why is co-location an important question? The panel discussion will include: why co-locate; how the decision was made; how integration was accomplished; benefits & drawbacks; and lessons learned.

Track 1: The Art of Making Maintenance Manageable

8 - 9:15 a.m.
Capitol Ballroom 4, Fourth Floor, Hyatt Regency Denver

Technological improvements have brought about new challenges to preventative maintenance. Join a discussion on how you can improve efficiency within your agency's maintenance operations.

The old adage 'if it ain't broke, don’t fix it' is not a mantra that is applicable in this age of new technology. Technological improvements has brought about new thinking in the performance of preventive maintenance, which is vital to the industry. This requires a paradigm shift in our thinking so as to promote efficiency in maintenance - whether it be the rail cars or the infrastructure. Our presenters will discuss how you can reduce downtime while maintaining safety, how CBTC is affecting rail maintenance programs, suggestions for eliminating tons of maintenance data on paper with a simple electronic app, the ever-increasing need for track access for maintenance work, and balancing the need for train operations.

Track 5: Sustainability & Resiliency Strategies

8 - 9:15 a.m.
Agate, Third Floor, Hyatt Regency Denver

Strategies for meeting triple bottom line and implementing resiliency

Applying sustainability processes can assist organizations in thinking, communicating, planning, and designing creatively to help leadership realize a more effective future and to best meet the triple bottom line. In addition, transit systems are becoming increasingly vulnerable to sea level rise, increased hurricane storm surge, and flooding due to major rain events. Join us in learning about the value of applying sustainability principles and actions to an organization, hearing about climate resiliency tools and mitigation strategies, and sustainability features and systems implemented in one rail project.

Track 2: A Matter of Perspective: On-Time Performance on the National Rail Network

9:30 - 10:45 a.m.
Capitol Ballroom 5&6, Fourth Floor, Hyatt Regency Denver

Safety being the exception, there is no other equally critical metric on a railroad or transit system than on-time-performance, (OTP). Although OTP has many different interpretations, it is undeniably a universally recognized and accepted key performance indicator used in defining the overall success of a railroad or transit agency and those contractors who perform the services. Achieving an acceptable level of OTP presents a daily challenge that requires the optimal performance of equipment and the infrastructure that supports the operations. Exacerbating this challenge, is on a multiple user rail corridor that blends a mix of passenger and freight trains - each schedule driven, each demanding track time, and each with their own performance metrics. Clearly in order for each user to attain success, a partnership that is based on mutual respect for each other’s rights to be on the corridor is of critical importance. This session will focus on what some railroads and commuter agencies are doing to promote these corridor partnerships and their resultant successes.
